We recently replace a failing culvert for a property owner (WHERE?). The original culvert was (Not installed properly?) and as a result, water damaged the road. We began by excavating and removing the old culvert. The new culvert is a larger in diameter than the old culvert, so we enlarged and shaped the channel accordingly. Next, we used a laser to ensure the channel had the proper amount of “fall” or slope to keep the water flowing in the correct direction. The project was completed by backfilling, compacting and then grading the new road base.
Why do culverts fail?
While there can be many contributing factors, we find that undersized culverts are the most common reason that culverts fail. When a culver is undersized, water flow generated during periods of heavy rainfall can either run over the top of the road surface or erosion can begin around the mouth of the culvert, eventually leading to a collapse of the road base from underneath.
